Nursing Leadership Skills Of Successful Nurse Managers

Transforming Nursing Leadership Nursing leaders are an integral part of health care, and more leaders are needed to aid in the transitions with health care reform. More mentors are essential in order to teach nurses how to become successful leaders, but it takes a positive and open personality as a nurse leader to mentor another nurse. Numerous characteristics are valuable for nurses to be successful leaders. I believe more research regarding nursing leaders as mentors is important to retain nurses in the field. Throughout my research concerning characteristics of effective mentors, much of the research is in other countries. I have compiled a few articles that exhibited successful or ideas for successful characteristics of mentors in the nursing field. An article written by two doctoral level nurses titled â€Å"Transformational leadership skills of successful nurse managers† (Heuston Wolf, 2011) focuses on what skills it takes to be an effective nurse manager. The main point that stuck out to me was the idea of implementing â€Å"transformational leadership† (Heuston Wolf, 2011, p.248) based on creating an open and trusting environment within the entire health care team to implement positive change. Heuston and Wolf have compiled five ways to be an effective mentor, including encouraging questions, being involved, present and available, encouraging nurses to become experts and show investment in learning, and teamwork (Heuston Wolf, 2011, p.249).
